Reno, Nevada Car Show Photos!

I made a last minuted decision last night to grab the gear and head down to Reno Nevada for some photography fun at the Hot August Nights car show. It was crowded, but not as many people as I expected. I was able to get right up to the railing at the Downtown Reno neon sign and captured some images that I'm pretty happy with!

All shot on a Canon R5 MarkII with a 24-105mm lens. Handheld. The settings all varied but they were all very high ISOs and most of them were at 1/200 of a second exposure.

These last three are ICM photos, or Intentional Camera Movement photos. I used about a half second shutter speed and moved the camera while zooming the lens in or out. The type of image has a very high falure rate for me. So I shoot tons of them, and hope for a few "keepers". I was happy with these.

The event is still going on Saturday night and Sunday. If you happen to be in Reno, Nevada, I would highly recommend checking it out!

Thank for looking and have a great day.

Shooting and Shooting in Nevada Yesterday

I helped a friend with a chore near Lovelock, Nevada yesterday. I brought my camera and my friend brought a shotgun and some clay targets, so some fun was had while we were out there! The clouds were looking incredible. After shooting at targets, I shot this old nearby "home" with the amazing clouds in the sky.

_U8A3025.jpg

Shot with a Canon R5 MarkII and a 24-105mm lens, set at 24mm. The ISO was 400, the shutter speed was 1/200 of a second, and the lens aperture was f/16 in order to get the foreground and the clouds in the background in focus. A polarizing filter was used on the front of the lens in order to bring out even more detail in the dynamic clouds.

I am very much out of practice when in comes to shooting clay targets, I didn't hit many of them. Fortunately, I'm a bit better at shooting photos...

Hope you all are having a great weekend!

Road Trip Rainbow!

On my drive back to Truckee, California from Denver, Colorado a few days ago, I was treated to this beautiful sight. It was a looong drive and it was raining for most of it. As I was getting closer to the finish line, there was a break in the storm and I was saw this colorful scene that made me pull over and fire off a few photos. Shot near Mill City, in the north western area of Nevada.

_U8A4385.jpg

Shot with a Canon R5 MarkII and a 24-105mm lens. It was a quick, handheld shot. The ISO was 200, the lens aperture was f/11, and the shutter speed was 1/250 of a second. A polarizing filter was used on the front of the lens. Polarizers can help bring out the color a bit more in rainbows, and can create a bit more contrast and depth in the clouds. I almost always carry a polarizing filter with me, even if I am going lightweight with one body and one lens.

Oh, and no road trip would be complete without a little "drama". Flat tire! Changed it and was back on the road in about 30 minutes.

Thank you for looking and I hope you all have a great and colorful day, with no flat tires!

New Reno Area Online Gallery Added

Gotta love Springtime!

Yesterday, I was able to get down to Reno, Nevada and after running a couple errands, I headed to Downtown Reno with the camera. The trees are blossoming down there right now, and everything is looking incredible, everywhere you look. Shooting the Reno Arches with blossoms in the foreground has been on my to-do list for many many years. However, the blossoms don't last very long at all, and I always seem to miss the peak of the show. Not this year! My timing worked out perfectly, and I was able to get these two "keeper" shots.

_Q1A9636.jpg

Both of these were shot handheld with the Canon 5DS R and a 24-105mm lens. The cameras's ISO was 200, and the shutter speed was 1/200 of a second. The aperture varied. The top photo is the main arch on the main strip in Downtown Reno. The bottom photo is of the smaller, older arch a couple of blocks away.

These photos are already up on my new website, available as large or small prints, canvas prints, prints on metal, framed prints, tote bags, phone cases, greeting cards, and more! I'm very happy with my new website as I've already received some very large print orders! Today, I added a whole new category of Reno area images to the site, if you're curious, you can check it out here: Reno Area Gallery

Pyramid Lake Fishing Photos

Yesterday was a good day! My budddy Blake of Pisces Outdoors invited me and another buddy out for the opening day of fishing at Pyramid Lake in Nevada (Northeast of Reno a bit, near the Black Rock Desert, where Burning Man takes place). Blake makes and sells fishing lures, he also recently obtained his fishing guide license and can now bring clients out for fishing adventures on his bad-ass boat.

The day started out rough. The waves were big and scary. But again, Blake's boat is bad-ass and handled the waves with no problems. I, however, ended up seasick and the first couple of hours of fishing were rough for me. Eventually, the awful feeling went away and I was having a blast! Many fish were caught, they were all Lahontan Cutthroat Trout. All of them were big, one was a very large one, probably about 12 pounds.

Here's one that I caught:

Here's Blake's "winner" of the day. We were quick to release the fish so they could live to be caught another day. This meant we did not have time to weigh the fish, but again, the three of us experienced fishermen agreed, about 12 pounds for this one. Yes, that's a GoPro in the shot. Blake has a YouTube channel and I was also helping a bit with video camera work. Here's Blake's channel: Pisces Outdoors on YouTube The video will be released soon...

This is Blake's boat, at the boat launch. We did not start at sunrise because the wind was supposed to die down mid-day, which means the waves should have started to lay down a bit at launch time.

20231001_112303.jpg

NOPE! The wind and waves did not mellow out for another couple hours. And again, I ended up getting seasick...

20231002_100710.gif

Our buddy Paul and his dog Bubba were both BEASTS on this trip. Bubba handled the rough water like a champ, he is a very experienced dog when it comes to fishing adventures. Paul was incredible when it came to gearing up the rods with tackle and landing the most fish. He's not very patient and would change the lures out often with new ones. But this was a great technique because he was quickly able to figure out what was working and again, we caught tons of fish!

20231001_161605.jpg

Here's a few more happy fishermen photos:

20231001_133122.jpg

20231001_153838.jpg

20231001_133056.jpg

And here's a look at some of the lures we were using. Blake makes and sells the "spoons". Plugs also worked for us, as well as a few other types. Many many fish were caught, we were out there almost all day, so many types of lures were used. On "opening day" the fish haven't seen lures for a few months so they aren't cautious and bite a lot. So much fun!

20231001_170824.jpg

We had one double hook-up, when two fish bite at the same time (different rods and lures). It's always fun even though it creates a bit of chaos on the boat. I actually caught that fish Blake is holding on the right... But as the photographer on the boat, it was my duty to get the photo, lol.

20231001_173300.jpg

Almost all of the fish were released. We did keep a couple and I now have half of one fish in my freezer, the other half is in the refrigerator and is going to be my dinner tonight, woohoo! Pyramid Lake has very strict rules about what size fish you can keep, and how many. The lake is on on an Indian Reservation and the Paiute Tribe does an incredible job with managing the fish population there. It's not that uncommon for fishermen to land a 20 pound trout there. And there are SO MANY fish in that lake, you are really doing something wrong if you walk away empty handed.

20231001_173128.jpg

We had to stop for a minute along the shore, in order to let Bubba the dog go pee. While there, I ended up with this cool shoreline landscape photo. I was happy with it and it is now available to order as prints on my website: "Fall Colors at Pyramid Lake".

I also got Blake a nice photo of his boat. I always make sure to get some good photos for his website, that way I get invited back out again!

Thanks for looking and I hope you all had a great weekend too. FISH ON!

Art Obsessions and The Rancharrah Shopping Center

The Rancharrah Shopping Center in Reno, Nevada and the Art Obsessions Gallery (where I sell my prints out of) have been a lot busier lately. For obvious reasons, things slowed down at the new shopping center quite a bit but now things are opening back up, more new businesses and restaurants have been moving in, and Art Obsessions has been open, busy, and hosting events.

There will be a fun wine tasting event this Saturday at the gallery. Michelle Courier will be the featured artist and will be at the gallery both Saturday and Sunday, July 17-18th. LifeWine will be doing wine tastings both days as well. (More information here). I will also be at the gallery this Saturday, helping out with the event. A bit of my work will also be on exhibit, as always.

I thought I'd post a few new photos of the Rancharrah Shopping Center and also of the Rancharrah Mansion. The sunset views of the mansion from the shopping center are incredible!

"Rancharrah Sunset 3" - Photograph of a walking bridge and the Rancharrah Mansion in Reno, Nevada, shot during an incredible sunset.
"Rancharrah Sunset 3" - Photograph of a walking bridge and the Rancharrah Mansion in Reno, Nevada, shot during an incredible sunset.

"The Village at Rancharrah 1" - Photograph of the Village at Rancharrah shopping center at dusk, the Rancharrah Mansion can be seen in the distance.

"Rancharrah Mansion at Christmas 1" - Photograph of the Rancharrah Mansion in Reno, Nevada with Christmas lights decorating the mansion.

"Rancharrah Sunset 2" - Sunset photograph of the famous Rancharrah mansion in Reno, Nevada.

And, here's a slideshow of these image and more photos of the Art Obsessions Gallery, the Rancharrah Shopping Center, events at those locations, and a few more Reno, Nevada photos.

Thank you for looking and I hope to see you at the gallery this Saturday or at another event there.  Please consider subscribing to the gallery's newsletter for the latest event info. The subscribe link can be found at the bottom of this page: https://artobsessions1.com

The Amazing Fly Geyser - Photography Slideshow

Bucket-list item, check! I never thought I'd actually be lucky enough to shoot this incredible sight but last week, I did! The famous man made Fly Geyser. It's tough to shoot because it sits on protected private property in Nevada near the town of Gerlach. But I was incredibly lucky that a good friend was able to get us access. Tony Spiker of Spiker Photography got the green light when he approached the property owners with a fundraising project. I'll post a link to his project when he has everything ready to go.

Fly Geyser was amazing to shoot. I can't believe how many different looks it can have in less than a 24 hour period. The tufa part of the geyser is made up of different minerals and the vibrant colors are due to the thermophilic algae on it. The colors shine through on daylight, sunset, sunrise, and night shots. A little extra light on the geyser from flashlights and/or camera flashes can really bring out the color in difficult lighting conditions. The spraying water and steam are constant which made for some great long exposures.  It was so much fun to shoot!

More information about the geyser can be found on it's Wikipedia page:

Please enjoy this Fly Geyser slideshow below. A full screen slideshow can be viewed by CLICKING HERE.  These images are available to purchase as large fine art prints, printed by me personally, through my website and through Tahoe area art galleries.
