Beautiful Day Of Fishing Pyramid Lake, Nevada

Yesterday was an incredible day that I will probably be talking about for years to come. I got the last minute call the night before to join my buddy on his boat for the Pyramid Lake, Nevada fishing opening day.

We saw a few beautiful rainbows in the sky while out on the water. Always a sign of good luck...

The scenery was incredible. And the fishing was even better! So many cutthrought trout were caught.

41 fish, to be exact. I downloaded and used a little fish counter on my phone. Catch numbers are usually impressive at this lake, especially on opening day with the fish haven't seen lures in a while.

This sunrise photo below was taken out the truck window on our drive to the boat launch. The day started off great!

The line at the boat launch is always a bit crazy on opening day. But it gave us plenty of time to prepare the boat and get set up.

My buddy Blake, the boat owner, is a fishing guide. He knows how to catch! I appreciate it when I get the invite to join him as I usually go home with dinner in the cooler. And I always try to get him a few photos for his socials and website.

His guide service is called Pisces Outdoors. He also has a website where he sells lures that he makes: www.piscesoutdoors.com And He also has a fishing YouTube Channel.

Another buddy, Paul, also joined us. These two guys are way better fishermen than me. I always appreciate learning as much as I can from them. We mostly used plug style lures, but a variety of lures were used, and a variety of colors.

All of the fish were released to be caught another day.

Well, all were release but one... lol. Yummy! I had 1/3 of the fish for lunch today. Two more meals in the freezer.

So many smiles, laughs, and good time out there!

New Rainbow Photos

The weather has been wild this last week. So much rain in the afternoons! And what does that mean??? Well, lately it means RAINBOWS!!! There have been rainbows the last three evenings, and I have been lucky to have the time to get out with the camera and capture them.

_U8A5851.jpg

This photo is above the cherry on top for me. I can't wait to print it up huge. I have been trying to capture a rainbow over Rainbow Bridge and Truckee, CA for over 20 years. Every time I make the drive up there after seeing a rainbow in town, it is gone by the time I make it up Old Hwy 40. Finally! And with yellow blooming rabbitbrush in the foreground, yes!

Shot with the Canon R5 MKII and a 24-105mm lens, with a polarizing filter on the front of the lens. The ISO was 50, the shutter speed was 1 second long (camera on a tripod), and the lens aperture was nice and small, f/22, in order to have a sharp focus on the flowers in the foreground and the mountains in the background.

Here's a couple more rainbow photos, above and below. These were actually shot across the street from where I live. It's so nice to be able to look out the window at the lake, see the rainbows, grab the gear, and capture these scenes.

This Morning's Donner Lake Rainbow

I could tell this morning that it was "rainbow weather". So I was keeping an eye on the sky, and wouldn't you know, I saw one! It was an incredibly bright and vibrant rainbow, I happen to be driving along Donner Lake, here in Truckee, California when it popped out. As usual, I had my camera with me so I pulled over, slapped a polarizing filter on the front of my lens, ran out to the shore, and started shooting. I ran because experience has taught me that rainbows can disappear fast. I've seen them before, got all set up, only to have them fade away right before I start clicking.

Shot with a Canon R5 MarkII and a 24-105mm lens. ISO 400, the lens aperture was f/13, and the shutter speed was 1/200 of a second. Again, a polarizing filter was on the front of the lens. They help bring out the color a bit more in rainbows. But be careful with them, they can also make rainbows disappear if the polarizer is not adjusted properly. Handheld shot, I was rushing and didn't grab the tripod or have time to set it up.

Road Trip Rainbow!

On my drive back to Truckee, California from Denver, Colorado a few days ago, I was treated to this beautiful sight. It was a looong drive and it was raining for most of it. As I was getting closer to the finish line, there was a break in the storm and I was saw this colorful scene that made me pull over and fire off a few photos. Shot near Mill City, in the north western area of Nevada.

_U8A4385.jpg

Shot with a Canon R5 MarkII and a 24-105mm lens. It was a quick, handheld shot. The ISO was 200, the lens aperture was f/11, and the shutter speed was 1/250 of a second. A polarizing filter was used on the front of the lens. Polarizers can help bring out the color a bit more in rainbows, and can create a bit more contrast and depth in the clouds. I almost always carry a polarizing filter with me, even if I am going lightweight with one body and one lens.

Oh, and no road trip would be complete without a little "drama". Flat tire! Changed it and was back on the road in about 30 minutes.

Thank you for looking and I hope you all have a great and colorful day, with no flat tires!

Yesterday's Rainbow Above Donner Lake

_Q1A0445.jpg

What? You don't see it? Look harder, it's there...

Alright, here is a better look at it below. I was on a hike and when I got to a summit where I could see the lake, I noticed the big rainbow! So I took a photo with my phone real quick. Rainbows can disappear quickly. By the time I got my Canon camera out of the bag for the photo above, the rainbow had started to fade. Oh well, it was still a nice shot and very nice to witness.

20231105_101258.jpg
What am I pointing at? My home! I could see my apartment across Donner Lake and it looked like my new home was at the end of the rainbow. My little pot of gold! I actually love my new home, the location anyway. The size of the pad is very small, but it works for me and I am enjoying being here.

20231105_100331.jpg

The trail that I was on crosses railroad tracks. Unfortunately, this very long train was stopped on the tracks and was blocking the trail. There was one train cart/car that had a lot of space under it so I quickly ducked under it and crossed the tracks. I'm glad I did, instead of turning around. The rainbow scene was just a little bit past this spot.

20231105_095651.jpg

It was a long hike, about 8.3 miles. I am participating in a cross-country ski training program and we have scheduled walks and runs six days a week. It's a lot of work but I should be in great shape for winter. Feeling ready to get out on the skis with my camera and capture many more winter wonder land scenes! It's actually supposed to snow a bit this evening, so I may be out there soon rater than later...
